The escape character for a space is ” ” (a slash and a space). I tested this on my download.mpshouse.com portal.

Thanks a lot for the article. I do love wget while at the same time I do have one unresolved issue and this is how to handle files with spaces in the filename.
For example if we have a link to a file “http://www.somesite.com/sites/default/files/Some%20Filename.pdf” or “http://fs31.filehippo.com/1758/60795340ddd64736ab4dcbd00e34cf52/Firefox%20Setup%207.0.exe” how do we download the file using wget?
